Portal Game World – Warner Bros. Games has announced that it will be discontinuing the mobile game Harry Potter: Magic Awakened just over a year following its worldwide debut.
Developed by Zen Studio and published by Warner Bros. Games under the Portkey Games brand, Harry Potter: Magic Awakened made its Western debut in June 2023. The game, which is a collectible card role-playing game, allows players to assume the role of a new Hogwarts student who uses collectible cards to cast spells in duels.
As of August 26, the game has been remove from both the iOS App Store and Google Play Store. Players will have access to the servers until October 29, 2024, but in-game purchases are no longer available.
In Asia, where the game’s release was manage by the Chinese company NetEase, the game will continue to be accessible. This follows recent news that NetEase is shutting down its Visions of Mana developer, Ouka Studios. Despite its closure in Western regions, Harry Potter: Magic Awakened will remain operational in Asia, including Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, and other selected Asian and MENA regions.
Warner Bros. issued a statement on their support website, saying, “We have shared the magical journey of Harry Potter: MagicAwakened with millions of fans around the world. The time has come for the game to officially close its servers in the Americas, Europe, and Oceania territories on October 29, 2024. However, players in Asia will still be able to enjoy the game.”
The statement continued, “We want to express our gratitude to players in the Americas, Europe, and Oceania for their support, and we are deeply honored that so many fans worldwide have engage with Harry Potter: MagicAwakened with such enthusiasm.”
Following the announcement, players have voiced their disappointment, seeking refunds, and requesting that Warner Bros. allow NetEase to continue publishing the game in the West or facilitate server transfers. Warner Bros. has responded by stating that server transfers and refunds are not possible, and has not provided any further comments on the potential for NetEase to assume responsibility for the Western market.
The closure of Harry Potter: Magic Awakened comes just before the release of Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions, a new game centered around the fictional sport, set to launch on September 3 for PC and consoles.
